The Legacy of Angelo Secchi SJ 200 years after his birth

On September 3-5, 2018, the Biblioteca Casanatense will host the International Conference ‘The Legacy of Angelo Secchi SJ 200 Years after his Birth’. Internationally known scholars will present  contributions  in the different research areas that saw Secchi as pioneer with his experimental studies, that were most innovative for the time. Father Angelo Secchi was undoubtedly one of the first scientists to promote the use of photography and spectroscopy to study stars. The classification of stars he devised is still followed today, while his studies on the Sun have opened the way to the most advanced investigations on solar activity and on the structure and evolution of stars. Thus astronomy and astrophysics, but a legacy also in meteorology, geophysics, geodesy and geomagnetism.
